CARAVAGGIO

I saw Derek Jarman’s Caravaggio at last. It is like reading Dostoevsky for the first time in your thirties; you feel deeply sorry for having wasted all those years in ignorance after realizing what a great feast for the hungry soul it is... no, I ain’t exaggerating. On the other hand, life experience (or rather, cultural experience let’s say) of the-late-reader (and in my case, the-late-viewer) allows him/her to appreciate the piece at hand more than he would some years ago. It is sorrow that I feel since I saw Caravaggio yesterday, sorrow of the impotent living, in regard to absolute power of the dead, of the painter, of the director, of light, of darkness.

Yes, it is weird to compare the impact of a Jarman film with Dostoevsky’s work. And yes, it was that deep, the impact.

And some days before that there was CSONTVARY, but that is a different story to be told some other time.

I loved all the films I saw this year in the Istanbul film festival. Yaşasın festivalin 25. yılı. Bizi yıllardır kazıklayıp durmanızın öcünü aldık işte, demek ki biletler ucuz olunca kimse ölmüyormuş. Öldünüz mü yoksa? Bana ne ya.
